Recently, I hosted my 7th annual Women, Wine & Wealth event. From the start, I envisioned a fun event where women could ask questions, share experiences and learn how and why they should take control of their finances. This year’s event focused on 3 topics. First, I discussed being the CFO of your home; knowing cash flow and expenses, getting and staying organized and setting goals and annually reviewing your progress. Second, I discussed the inherent risks of today’s bull market, knowing how much to take and when to scale back. Lastly, we discussed a “roadmap to retirement;” key triggers for your golden years. Women today are exceptionally busy and have unique financial challenges. Statistically, we live longer, have less saved for retirement, work in fields less likely to have pensions, earn less in social security benefits, have a greater chance of being in a nursing home and tend to be more conservative. All reasons to be financially empowered! While we often take on the role of care giver, initially, we need to take care of ourselves. Unfortunately, I see women with unrealistic expectations, or worse, haven’t considered where they’ll eventually be financially. While this event has something for everyone, it will always be especially helpful to women in transition. So whatever stage you are in, or transitioning into, you need to have a plan.
